The KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory (KSL) is co-organizing with ANSYS and their channel partner for the Middle East, Fluid Codes, a three-day ANSYS workshop about ANSYS based engineering applications using Shaheen II Supercomputer from April 9th to April 11th. ANSYS is a leader in developing and marketing engineering simulation software. By building a simulated computer model, ANSYS software is typically used to determine the functionality of a product under various operating conditions. The design parameters are reduced before building prototypes or conducting crash/wind tunnel/lab tests. If you have ever witnessed a rocket launch, flown on an airplane, driven a car, utilized a computer or a mobile device, crossed a bridge, or put on wearable technology, chances are that you have used a product where ANSYS software played a critical role in its creation [https://www.ansys.com/about-ansys].
The objective of this workshop is to engage industrial partners, educate engineering students, and strive towards establishing full service for providing engineering simulation solutions to the Saudi Industry.
A comprehensive training and certification program will take place on the first two days, and the third day is allocated for the workshop. The summary of the planned activities for this free of cost event is shown below.
Day 1: Geometry and Meshing

Day 2: Introduction to ANSYS Fluent
- Overview of CFD
- Setting up domain and physics
- Running CFD problems

Day 3: Workshop
- Solid mechanics and CFD analysis in Oil & Gas industry
- Using ANSYS on Shaheen II
- Digital twin for preventive maintenance
- New features in ANSYS 2019 R1
- Instantaneous simulation with discovery live
The event is open to all researchers, students, and managers, who are working at KAUST or at any educational institute or industry in Saudi Arabia. However, the event is primarily targeting the following:
- KAUST students who have little background in modeling and simulation and would like to learn it quickly to jumpstart their research
- KAUST researchers who are doing experimental work and would like to learn a convenient way to simulate the phenomenon he or she is investigating
- KAUST students who are graduating with a specialty in modeling and simulation and are interested in seeking employment opportunities
- Saudi industrial partners looking to scale up their ANSYS-based simulation on Shaheen or seeking full CFD services from KSL
- Undergraduate students from Saudi Universities who are interested in polishing their skills of modeling and getting exposure to a world-class supercompute

Ajay Parihar is working with Fluid Codes as a Technical Manager -CFD and has more than 17 years of experience in the field of engineering simulations (CFD, FSI etc.) related to various industries such as process, oil and gas, automotive and aerospace. Prior to joining Fluid codes, Ajay Parihar has worked with ANSYS India for 10 years and 3 years with Emerson Climate Technology. In various roles, Ajay has executed and mentored numerous technical projects solving and providing design solutions to customers using CFD and other engineering tools. He has expertise in single/Multi-phase flows, rotating machinery, turbulence, fluid-structure interaction, heat transfer and design optimization. Ajay Parihar holds a M. Tech (Master of Technology) in Mechanical Engineering (specialized in Thermal & Fluids) from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.
Karl van Aswegen is an experienced FEA Analyst with over 10 years of experience working on a wide variety of projects all over the world. Karl holds a BEng (Mechanical) and MScEng (Mechanical) degree from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and is also a registered professional engineer (Pr.Eng) with the engineering council of South Africa (ECSA). Karl has been in charge of creating the ANSYS ASME ACT Extension for Assessment of the Protection against Local Failure, which is being used worldwide by ANSYS customers. He has developed hundreds of pressure vessels analysis with ANSYS Mechanical, including non-linear analyses of Nozzles.
|Rooh Khurram is working as a Staff Scientist at Supercomputeing Core Lab at KAUST. At KSL, Rooh provides full support for CFD workflows. He has conducted research in finite element methods, high performance computing, multiscale methods, fluid structure interaction, detached eddy simulations, in-flight icing, and computational wind engineering. He has over 15 years of industrial and academic experience in CFD. He specializes in developing custom made computational codes for industrial and academic applications. His industrial collaborators include: Boeing, Bombardier, Bell Helicopter, and Newmerical Technologies Inc. Before joining KAUST in 2012, Rooh worked at the CFD Lab at McGill University and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Rooh received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005. In addition to a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Rooh has degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.|
